Nigeria’s Charkin Centre Expands with New International Training Centre, Signs Contract with Virtual Marine to House it’s Simulators
February 8, 2023, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada - Port Harcourt-based Charkin Maritime Training Centre has signed a multi-million dollar contract with Canadian company, Virtual Marine for the supply of a full range of lifeboat coxswain and fast rescue boat simulators. As the largest private maritime training centre in Nigeria, Charkin is expanding its service offering to upstream energy markets in Nigeria and across the African continent.
Charkin has designed a new purpose-built training centre that will house a full range of Virtual Marine simulators. Included is a freefall lifeboat simulator on motion base, a full mission twin-fall simulator with integrated hook trainers, a full mission fast rescue boat simulator and a desktop lifeboat simulator with additional fast rescue boat and winch control operator payloads. Together, these simulators will form the most comprehensive lifeboat and fast rescue boat training capabilities in Africa, facilitating additional growth for Charkin into key markets.
Charkin Centre CEO, Sir Charles Wami said, “This project represents a significant investment in the digitalization of our traditional lifeboat and fast rescue boat training services. It will position Charkin in the lead pole position as the key provider for freefall, twin fall and fast rescue boat training in Nigeria and across the African continent. We spent significant time designing this venture and concluded that Virtual Marine was the only supplier who could execute on what we needed.”
Sir Charles went on to say, “Together with our highly experienced team at Charkin, we view this relationship with Virtual Marine as an important part of our business model in 2023 and beyond. A key element in this project will be ensuring compliance with OPITO and STCW. We are working closely with The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to ensure we are providing the very best available regulatory training available to our customers.”
Virtual Marine’s VP of Sales, Clayton Burry said, “We are honoured that Charkin Centre has selected Virtual Marine for this important project, which is now well into production at our facilities in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador. Charkin has demonstrated a high level of engagement on this project with very clear objectives set in support of its existing and future customer base.”
He went on to say, “Our mission at Virtual Marine is to be the world leader in lifeboat, fast rescue boat and ice management simulation. This project is further testament to the dedication and innovation our people demonstrate every day, as we continue to disrupt traditional lifeboat and fast rescue boat training markets globally. We appreciate the high degree of confidence Charkin has placed in our company, as well as their own incredible energy and focus that will ensure their continued success.”
System installation and commissioning of the project is planned for completion in early August 2023.
